Understanding Minecraft MOTD and how to make the most of it
What is a Minecraft MOTD Message, and Why Does It Matter?
A Minecraft MOTD (Message of the Day) is the text displayed in your server list after adding a server. It appears between the server icon and the connection indicator.
A well made MOTD is a great way to showcase your server's features and make it stand out among the many other Minecraft servers. A beautiful MOTD can attract more players to your server, making it a must have thing for your server.
How to Create a Minecraft MOTD Message
You can manually create an MOTD by typing out your message and using Minecraft formatting codes to style it. However, you don't have to do it manually, our MOTD Creator Tool allows you to easily create and edit your server's message with a visual editor.
Minecraft MOTD Limitations
There are certain restrictions when creating an MOTD:
- Character Limit: A single line can contain up to 59 characters. You can have a maximum of two lines.
- Icons & Emojis: Regular emojis and custom icons cannot be added (except in newer Java versions using specific methods).
Version Based Limitations
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition
- Uses Java syntax color codes, but color variants are limited.
- Supports all formatting options.
- Icon support is limited.
Minecraft: Java Edition
- Pre 1.16 Versions: Supports Java color codes and all styling options but does not support icons.
- 1.16+ Versions: Supports everything from earlier versions, plus:
- Hex color formatting
- Icons
- Color gradients
Possible Styling Options
- Bold – Makes the text bold in the MOTD.
- Italic – Gives the text a slanted, stylized look.
- Underline – Underlines the text.
- Strikethrough – Strikes through the text.
- Obfuscated – Animates the text, making it unreadable.

How to Center a Minecraft MOTD Message
To manually center an MOTD, follow these steps:
- Count the total number of characters in your message.
- Subtract that number from 59 (the maximum allowed per line).
- Divide the result by two and add that many spaces to both sides of the message.
Since spaces count as characters, this method can be tedious. Instead, use our MOTD Creator Tool's "Center" button to automatically center your text. Unlike other tools, ours actually adds proper centering.
How to Add Your MOTD Message to Your Server
Once you've created your MOTD, follow these steps to apply it to your server:
- Click "Copy to Clipboard" to copy your message.
- Go to your hosting dashboard.
- Open the File Manager and locate the file named server.properties.
- Find the line that starts with motd=.
- Paste your MOTD message after the = sign.
- Save the file and restart your server.
That's it! Your custom MOTD is now live.
